About the Installation

Video games are a medium that today is, in terms of stories, old and rich enough to become a powerful narrator. The installation “The videogames of our lives” aspires to tell a story that started writing itself in Bulgaria in the early 70’s and continues to develop today. It is a story that is forged at the intersection of the Bulgarian society with all its socio-economic specificities, the global rise of technologies and the gaming culture, and its skewed version in Bulgaria, following its local peculiarities and unique details.

The installation is in an early-alpha stage*, drawing inspiration from the cycles of software product development. As such, it currently features only one of the six decades it aims to explore and present - the 90s. While it is difficult to be objective and not miss on anything important, the team felt that rebuilding a children’s and a living room of an average major city household in the 90s is best suited as a stage for the story. In the 90s TV consoles and computers started slowly finding themselves in the homes of Bulgarians.

The project is a part of Goodgame Bulgaria’s activities, where we channel our passion for video games and imaginary worlds to make the one we live in better.

The initial idea is by Martin Kadinov, an entrepreneur and founder of Goodgame Bulgaria, and is developed by the teams at Goodgame Bulgaria and TDB Play. Following the traditions of game development, it is an inclusive process and its final form will be a product of hundreds of people who contribute with their ideas, stories and special moments.

Children’s Room

Children's Room Installation - 90s Famiclone Gaming Setup

The majority of 90s kids in Bulgaria were first introduced to video games through the Famiclone systems - unlicensed copies of Famicom (Japan) known as NES (in the west). Their entire hardware (CPU, PPU, audio) is contained within a single microchip, soldered to the circuit board and covered with epoxy resin in order to cut costs. Terms like “video game” and “console” were not widely used yet. Both the console and its games were known as “TV games”.

A lot of Famiclones were sold throughout the years in Bulgaria with Ending-Man BS-500 AS (more well known as Terminator 2) being arguably the most popular one. Consoles were not restricted to tech stores, you could easily buy one from the flea market as well. They were dirt cheap compared to fifth-generation consoles (Nintendo 64, PlayStation etc.), yet still somewhat pricey considering the low wages in Bulgaria.

Games were distributed via small rectangular cartridges similar to Japanese Famicom ones. Aside from widely distributed European titles like “Super Mario Bros”, “Duck Hunt”, “Contra” and “Battle City”, the local market saw illegal copies like “Target: Renegade” (distributed as “Double Dragon IV”), “Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu” (distributed as “Kung Fu Mario”), translated Japanese exclusives like “Nekketsu Kakutō Densetsu” (distributed as “Hero Fighter”) and “Mitsume ga Tōru” (distributed as “Three-Eyed Story”), SNES ports like “Earthworm Jim 3” and “Aladdin”, and unlicensed games like “Titenic” (later released as “Harry’s Legend”).

Famiclones are remembered for their “999999 in 1” cartridges. They did not in fact contain one million games each—it was usually around 10 to 20 distinct games with repeating titles, swapped colour palettes, or shifted level orders.

These 8-bit consoles became a household name in Bulgaria during the 90s. In our children’s room, you can play some of these classic games!

Living Room

Living Room Installation - 90s PlayStation Gaming Corner

PlayStation (1994) is the console that singlehandedly won the console war during the fifth generation against Sega Saturn, 3DO, and Nintendo 64. Sony heard the wind of change and decided their games would be distributed on CD-ROM instead of cartridges. However slow the load times were compared to Nintendo’s, CD-ROMs made up for them with their increased storage. Games could be larger—a significant advantage for Sony when negotiating with third-party publishers. Back then games were rarely released on multiple platforms, and PlayStation won a lot of exclusive titles from big publishers like Square and Konami. Both Panasonic and Sega used CD-ROMs as well, but their consoles were more pricey than the PlayStation.

The amalgamation of these factors rolled out the red carpet for Sony to capture the Eastern Bloc, which had just recently broken out of the “iron curtain”. Initially, PlayStations could be seen almost exclusively in local game centers. However, in the years following the financial crisis of the 90s, they started appearing in the living rooms of Bulgarian homes as well.

Whether due to the catalog of games or the changed physical media, Sony’s marketing push, or the higher prices of the console and games compared to the Famiclones, PlayStation became the “serious” gaming machine. It was treated differently than the rest. Rarely anyone called it a “TV game”—it was its own thing: The PlayStation. From that moment on, Sony became the leading player in the Bulgarian console market, with their machines outselling the rest even when performing worse elsewhere.

During its long tenure, PlayStation became home to many legendary games like Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo, and Tekken 3. They shaped the taste of many young gamers in Bulgaria. In our retro corner, you can play WWF SmackDown! 2. We picked it not only because it is a stellar multiplayer game, but because it best represents the time when SmackDown first came to Bulgarian TV. This is a story for another time though—for now, go and enjoy the game!
